I wonder if Asif Khan was ever influenced by the haunting lyrics of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’, for he does describe himself as a ‘closet astronaut’ and his work has an almost awe-inspiring sereneness about it.
Walls that throb with music samples each time one touched them at the Beatbox pavilion for Coca-Cola at the London Olympics 2012, to the Megafaces pavilion at the winter Olympics at Sochi 2014, that scanned visitors faces and recreated them on its facades in three dimensions. His work blends architecture and technology and signals what could be a comeback of an architecture that is relevant to the times. Recently the Vantablack painted pavilion for the winter Olympics in Korea is another addition to the architect’s list of impressive, thought-provoking works.
